Yaskawa / Magnetek General Purpose AC-Drive 50 Years of AC Drive Technology Fifty years ago, MagneTek provided adjustable frequency drives in the form of variable-speed-driven alternators. In the �60s, MagneTek introduced solid-state thyristor inverters to replace the alternator, significantly reducing the cost of adjustable frequency drives. In the early '70s, we introduced the first commercially-available Current Source AC drive. Although there was a price premium, AC drive performance was unmatched. This drive embodied the fundamental control concepts found in today�s vector control drive. Throughout the '80s, PWM technology improved, both in performance and reliability, and in the late '80s, MagneTek brought one of the most advanced microprocessor-based PWM AC drives to market. In 1990, MagneTek introduced the IGBT-based GPD 503 with instant success and dominant market position, followed by the VCD 703, flux vector control drive.
